There are many different methods. the Billings method assesses cervical mucus. Persona is a small computer which measures hormone changes on urine test sticks.

How effective? Billings method 99% effective if used correctly. Persona 94% effective

Good points No side effects, easy to learn. Persona can be bought in Boots, but it is expensive.

Bad points Needs self discipline and cooperation of both partners to work as you can't have sex on the fertile days

Does it protect against infections? No
